Program Overview
Endocrine-related illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and metabolic bone disease (i.e. osteoporosis) are major public health problems that contribute to significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Hence, there is a desperate need for motivated, well-trained academic endocrinologists and scientists with a strong commitment to understanding and treating these devastating disorders as well as their complications. To address this need, we have developed an outstanding NIH T32-funded Training Program in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism that takes advantage of the rich scientific and clinical resources at the University of Pittsburgh. Our core mission is to train the next generation of scientist and academic leaders in the field of Endocrinology by performing cutting edge multidisciplinary and translational research. Indeed, our training program has more than a 40-year history of success in providing both M.D. and Ph.D. trainees with the research and career skills required for successful independent academic careers in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism. We intend to continue this mission for years to come, and in doing so, hope to promote the understanding and treatment of these increasingly prevalent endocrine disorders.
